Local business gives advice on how to prepare your home for the first frost

COLORADO SPRINGS – As the colder months approach and temperatures start to drop, more and more people are starting to light ovens to heat their homes. A local business reminds people to make sure devices are working before using them for the season.

Andrew Van Wyk is Head of HVAC Services at WireNut Home Services, and he says it is recommended that you check your appliances now, before it’s too late. He also said that now is the time for many people to call the company for their annual preventive maintenance, while others are calling because their heaters are not functioning properly.

“As you can imagine, a lot of people turn it on for the first time, turn on their heating, and realize that something is wrong, something is wrong,” Van Wyk said. “A lot of people in Colorado don’t have an air conditioner, so they haven’t used the air conditioning and don’t realize there’s a problem with the furnace.”

Van Wyk says the first thing to do in winterizing your home is to check the air filter.

“If you can fit your thumb between the pleats of the filter, it’s probably not too tight. If they’re too close together, like the accordion style too close, then that probably stops too much airflow,” he said. Van Wyk. “Anytime there’s a problem, every time the filter gets dirty, it traps that heat inside, and it turns the oven off and basically overheats, just like a car engine would.”

It also recommends that the air filters be checked and changed every 30 days, and that preventive maintenance inspections of the devices be carried out annually.

“We don’t want people to have breakdowns, we want to make sure the system is going to work, just like a vehicle, it needs a check,” Van Wyk said.

An inspection and maintenance checks done early can also give you plenty of time to resolve the issue before winter arrives.

Be sure to check your water heater for any leaks or pressure issues. You can also put a water heater blanket around to keep more heat inside. Also perform maintenance checks on gas fireplaces.
