Koch Modular was engaged early in the process by Origin due to the company’s demonstrated expertise in reaction unit, distillation and filtration operations. The main goal of Origin’s process was to convert biomass into sustainable materials, including chloromethylfurfural (“CMF”) and hydrothermal carbon (“HTC”). Downstream of the Koch Modular system, Origin’s process involved the conversion of CMF to PET (polyethylene terephthalate); a strong and lightweight thermoplastic material commonly used in packaging, textiles and many other products.

Koch Modular designed and manufactured the plant’s 17 core process modules which were delivered to site on time. The installation of the Origin 1 module was to be completed by the end of the fourth quarter of 2021, as announced in April 2021. The installation of the module took place well ahead of the planned date, in October 2021, significantly reducing costs. project risks. The plant remains on track to be completed by the end of 2022, with commissioning and starting production thereafter.

Origin’s technology will transform carbon in biomass, like wood residue, into useful materials like plastic. The technology eliminates the need for fossil fuels and captures carbon in the process. Carbon negative products created with this technology are expected to be competitive with petroleum-based and recyclable products.

Koch Modular used its skilled engineering services, process conceptualization and pilot testing to bring Origin’s manufacturing technology to commercial production. “We are very pleased to be working alongside Origin on this innovative technology that will enable future mass production of carbon negative plant plastics,” said George schlowsky, president of Koch Modular.

“Our partnership with Koch Modular has brought our vision for this disruptive technology to life. Koch’s methodology, combined with over 40 years of engineering expertise and experience, has enabled robust manufacturing for our Origin 1 plant, ”said Origin Materials co-founder. and co-CEO John bissell. “We are on track for commercial scale production, a key step in our mission to enable the world’s transition to sustainable materials. “

About the original materials

Based in West Sacramento, Origin Materials is the world leader in carbon negative impact materials. Origin’s mission is to enable the world to transition to sustainable materials. Over the past 10 years, Origin has developed a platform to transform the carbon present in abundant and inexpensive non-food biomass, such as sustainable wood residue, into useful materials while capturing carbon in the process. Origin’s patented technology platform can help revolutionize the production of a wide range of end products, including clothing, textiles, plastics, packaging, auto parts, tires, carpets, toys, etc. with an addressable market of around $ 1 trillion. In addition, Origin’s technology platform is expected to deliver stable prices largely decoupled from the oil supply chain, which is subject to more volatility than supply chains based on sustainable wood residue. Origin’s patented core technology, economy and carbon impact are supported by a growing list of major global clients and investors.
