Instagram gives users more control over ‘sensitive content’ in the Explore tab

The Explore tab can sometimes look like the Wild West. The feed shows recommended posts from accounts you don’t follow, but you never really know what you’ll see. It may contain a photo, video or it may be scary even if it does not violate the rules of the platform.

To mitigate this, Instagram is a sensitive content control option. The goal is to let you choose how much sensitive content you see in the Explore feed and give you more control over how you use Instagram. You can adjust the filter by going to the app settings and then tapping on Account and sensitive content control.

You can reduce the number of sensitive posts in the Explore feed by selecting “Limit even more”. You can also deactivate the filter by changing the default option “Limit” to “Allow” (this choice will not be available for users under the age of 18, however). You can change the setting at any time.

Among the types of Instagram content are depictions of violence (although they do remove graphic violence). “Sexually explicit or suggestive” posts are also considered sensitive, such as photos or videos showing a person wearing transparent clothing – the platform does not allow posts that contain nudity or sexual activity.

If you’ve turned on the sensitive content filter, Instagram can also prevent posts that promote the use of certain restricted items from appearing in the Explore feed. These products include adult products and services, tobacco and vaping products, and pharmaceutical drugs. Instagram removes most of the content related to selling or trading.
