Dorm essentials to feel more at home – the Southeastern

Going from home to college can be culture shock. For some students, it can be difficult to decide what to bring and what will cause unnecessary stress. It is important to bring things that help you feel comfortable, but which also serve a purpose.

Heaven Williams, resident assistant and major junior in theater, recommends packing for extra comfort. “Comfort is important because culture shock is a real thing. Base most of your dorm on what you like, ”she suggested.

Second-year communications student Elysa Hernandez advises, “Bring a comfy blanket and a teapot, or some sort of comfortable drink that will make the students feel more comfortable. Also, don’t bring too many things, as the weather will change every semester so students can always go home and change whatever clothes they bring with them.

Students should bring a small stock of cooking utensils including bowls, plates, cooking utensils, a reusable water bottle, microwave, and mini-fridge. A coffee maker or Keurig is also a great idea for those who need their daily caffeine. These articles can help students save money on meals.

Another essential item to have on hand is a water filter. Tap water can contain hidden chemicals, and a water filter can remove them for student safety.

Keeping a well-stocked first aid kit nearby can be helpful if you or a friend needs to treat a minor illness or injury. (Through 8photo – www.freepik.com)

Stocking up on Dayquil, allergy medicine, cough drops, dressings, ointments, and other medical supplies will help you with illness or injury. RAs should also have first aid kits available.

Overall, bringing items to help us feel comfortable and safe is the most important aspect of moving to a new place. Bringing things that can help relieve stress, anxiety, and homesickness is essential.

If students need more advice on what to keep in their dorm, contacting an RA is a good way to go.
